The short answer
For most Meta ads you need just three shapes: 4:5 for Facebook and Instagram Feed, 9:16 for Stories and Reels, and 1:1 for Facebook carousel cards. Meta recommends 1440 x 1800 pixels for 4:5 and 1440 x 2560 pixels for 9:16.

Images: JPG or PNG. Video: MP4 or MOV (GIF is also accepted in Feed and Stories). Text lengths are Meta's recommendations, not hard limits: longer text is cut off with "See more".
Feed ads: 4:5
Meta recommends 4:5 vertical for Feed on both Facebook and Instagram, at 1440 x 1800 pixels. A 4:5 ad takes up more of the phone screen than a square or landscape one, which gives it more room to stop the scroll.
Instagram Feed accepts anything from 4:5 to 1.91:1 landscape. Landscape still works, but it shows much smaller on a phone. Facebook carousel cards are square, 1:1, at least 1080 x 1080 pixels, with 2 to 10 cards per ad.
Stories and Reels: 9:16 and the safe zone
Stories and Reels are full-screen and vertical: 9:16, at 1440 x 2560 pixels. Facebook Reels is a full-screen vertical placement too; Meta's Ads Guide lists its exact limits.
The profile name sits at the top and the caption and call-to-action button at the bottom, covering part of your creative. Meta's guidance is to keep roughly 14% at the top, 35% at the bottom and 6% on each side free of text, logos and other key elements.
One ad, every placement
You do not have to choose one shape. With Advantage+ placements, Meta shows your ad wherever it is likely to perform, and you can upload a different file for each placement group: a 4:5 version for Feed and a 9:16 version for Stories and Reels.
The practical setup for most advertisers is two files per ad: 4:5 and 9:16. Design the 9:16 version with the safe zone in mind, and keep the hook and product visible in the middle of the frame so both versions work.
Video specs worth knowing
- Format: MP4 or MOV with H.264 compression, square pixels, a fixed frame rate and progressive scan (Meta's Reels specs).
- Audio: stereo AAC at 128 kbps or more.
- Captions and sound are optional, but Meta recommends both for Reels. Feed video is often watched with the sound off, so burn in captions or use on-screen text.
- Length limits vary by placement: Instagram Stories and Feed video up to 60 minutes, Reels up to 15 minutes, Instagram carousel video cards up to 2 minutes. Most ads work best far shorter than the limit.
Common mistakes
- Text or the offer placed in the bottom third of a Story or Reel, where the call-to-action button covers it.
- Using a landscape 1.91:1 image in Feed, where it shows small next to 4:5 ads.
- Uploading one square file and letting Meta crop it for Stories, which can cut off text and faces.
- Low-resolution files. Meta's minimums are small (600 px wide for Facebook Feed images), but the recommended 1440 px width is what looks sharp on modern phones.
- Long primary text without a strong first line. Only the start shows before "See more".
