What is CPC?

CPC, or cost per click, is the average amount you pay each time someone clicks your ad. On Meta you will see two versions: CPC (all), which counts every click including likes and profile clicks, and CPC (cost per link click), which counts only clicks to your destination. For ads that send traffic to a site, cost per link click is the one to watch.

The CPC formula

CPC = ad spend ÷ clicks
Ad spend = CPC × clicks
Clicks = ad spend ÷ CPC

Use "Find ad spend" above to budget for a number of clicks, or "Find clicks" to see how much traffic a budget buys.

Worked example

You spent $500 and got 400 clicks. $500 ÷ 400 = $1.25 per click.

$500 ÷ 400 clicks = $1.25 CPC

Planning: if you need 2,000 visitors and your CPC is usually $0.90, budget about 2,000 × $0.90 = $1,800.

What drives your CPC

On Meta and TikTok you usually pay for impressions, so your CPC comes from two things: what the impressions cost (CPM) and how often people click (CTR).

CPC = CPM ÷ (CTR % × 10)

A $10 CPM with a 1% CTR gives a $1.00 CPC. Raise the CTR to 2% and the CPC halves to $0.50 without the CPM changing. That is why the creative is the biggest lever you control: you cannot set the auction price, but you can make an ad more people click.

The most you can afford per click

A cheap click is only good if enough clicks turn into sales. Your break-even CPC is your maximum cost per acquisition multiplied by your conversion rate:

Max CPC = max CPA × conversion rate
Example: $40 max CPA × 2.5% = $1.00 max CPC

If you pay more than that per click, each sale costs more than it earns. Find your max CPA with the ROAS calculator, which works it out from your price and costs.

Why is my CPC going up?

  • Your CPM rose: more competition for the same audience, often seasonal.
  • Your CTR fell: the ad is fatiguing as the same people see it again and again.
  • Your audience got narrower, or you moved to a more expensive placement or country.
  • You switched optimization goal, for example from traffic to purchases, which shows the ad to people who click less often but buy more.

Check CPM and CTR together to see which one moved. The Meta Ads Metrics Calculator gives you both from your raw numbers.

How to lower your CPC

  • Improve the hook and the offer to lift CTR.
  • Rotate in fresh creatives before CTR starts falling.
  • Broaden targeting so the auction has more people to choose from.
  • Test placements and formats; Reels and Stories can price clicks very differently from Feed.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate CPC?
Divide your ad spend by the number of clicks. $500 spent for 400 clicks is $500 ÷ 400 = a $1.25 CPC.
What is the difference between CPC and CPM?
CPC is what you pay per click; CPM is what you pay per 1,000 impressions. They are linked by CTR: CPC = CPM ÷ (CTR % × 10).
What is a good CPC?
Any CPC below your break-even CPC, which is your max CPA multiplied by your conversion rate. With a $40 max CPA and a 2.5% conversion rate, anything under $1.00 per click is profitable.
What is cost per link click on Facebook?
It is your spend divided by link clicks only, the clicks that go to your website or destination. CPC (all) also counts likes, comments and profile clicks, so it is usually lower and less useful for traffic or sales campaigns.
How do I budget for a number of clicks?
Multiply the clicks you want by your usual CPC. 2,000 clicks at $0.90 needs about $1,800. Use the "Find ad spend" option in the calculator.
